Welcome to Year 2

Throughout the year we take part in many interesting and challenging activities, learning how to work with each other and respect everyone in our class.  We also begin learning to speak French, develop our artistic skills and take part in singing lessons.

In the autumn term we study all aspects of materials with a focus on buildings both real and imaginary.  We design and make a variety of buildings, and discover famous buildings throughout the world.  These become destinations for programming our Bee-Bot robots!  In history we look at the buildings of 17th century England and how they fared in the Great Fire of London.  We also recreate the Great Fire in the school playground.   We enjoy writing about this subject using many features of information texts.  During this term a qualified sports coach helps us learn skills necessary to participate in team games.

In the spring term we become immersed in the story of Mr Grinling, the famous lighthouse keeper. We design information leaflets about lighthouses after research carried out during ICT lessons.  We write our own fabulous stories based around the character of Mr Grinling which we then read to our 'buddies' in Reception class. We also create sea poems containing imaginative vocabulary which everyone enjoys reading out loud.  In science we learn about the life cycles of different animals including humans, and also how to keep the body healthy through exercise and a balanced diet. We will design and make our own healthy picnic for Mr Grinling, which we will then enjoy as a class.   As we hope to see the sun during this term we go outside and become photographers, capturing images related to our 'Living Things' topic.

In the final term we work hard in order to be ready to make the step up to Key Stage 2. However it is also a very enjoyable term with extra outside activities and we investigate animals' habitats and plant growth. We learn about the importance of plants and how they support life on earth.  We spend time tending our Year 2 garden and growing lots of different plants from seed.  Some of these we will cook with and enjoy eating.  We visit the sea-side town of Clacton and compare landmarks in original photographs from Victorian times with their modern day equivalents. We also have a scavenger hunt on the beach to discover various natural objects.
